Life in the Desert

I have to admit, it amazes me every single time that I find a tree growing out between rocks, or little stream emerging from the sand. But what amazes me the most is a plant that can grow in the dunes.

Dunes? How on earth? It is a hostile environment to say the least, the rain is less than nothing and the heat ridiculous. And yet… here they are.

Ek moet erken, plante wat net uit niks uit groei, fassineer my eindeloos! ‘n Wilde vy wat so kronkel-kronkel tussen die rotse uit, ‘n stroompie water wat sommer hier op die oopgrond begin vorm en dan enige plant in die woestyn. Hoe op dees aarde?

Ek meen, duine sand is nou nie juis ideaal vir plante nie. Dis onmoontlik warm, die kondisies verander die heeltyd, geen reën… en tog is daar lewe in die woestyn.
