Otjiwa Mountain Biking

And so on Saturday 17th May 2015 I found myself in my first mountain bike race in just about 5 years. Not that I could really compete. We didn’t have time to even ride the full distance once while practicing (we only came to about 17km’s) and then we won’t mention the bikes… My hubby has a relatively new bike but both my dad’s bike and mine are about 10 years old. Of course, the 29 inch craze has hit Namibia incredibly hard, and so we were of the very few cyclists with 26 incers. Oh well… and so we cycled.

First off we realised that the heat was going to be a slight issue… we always ‘train’ in the late afternoons. Suddenly we had to face the morning heat as we only started at 9am. To put it lightly… I struggled!

After about 9km’s I had a slight hick-up when I broke a spoke. But hubby saved the day and we continued. We made good progress until an unfortunate misunderstanding with the organisers lost us valuable time and added unnecessary kilometers to our clocks. But at the end of day we managed to complete the route well in time with a faster average than we ever practiced at. All in all a great day out.

DSC_0138A big thank you to my mom who baby sat Mr Gorgeous. Without her, I obviously would not be able to participate in events like this. A massive big thanks to hubby who stayed with his unfit wife! (I know of quite a few gentlemen who were not so loyal!) And then last but not least – Dad, we are incredibly proud of you for also competing and finishing the race!
