Independence Day

25 Years ago about this time, I finally started to understand that my days of being an only child was almost over. It wasn’t easy but since her birth, my baby sister has always been a little light in my life.
Tomorrow, 25 years ago, Namibia became independent from South Africa. Our name promptly changed from South West Africa to Namibia. For many, this was doomday. (It wasn’t helped by the fact that it was one of the driest years on record and every single household had to scramble to make the most of the few hours that the water was turned on.) My seven year old brain did not understand much, but the emotions around me were of fear and anxiety. What would happen?
Today, 25 years later, I am proudly Namibian. I am proud of what our nation has achieved. Our Independence is not nearly as publicised as that of South Africa, but I think it ought to be. We have achieved so much more in a country just as diverse as South Africa.
Well done to all Namibians. We have done good.
Happy Independence weekend wherever you are.
